A rising number of countries have announced the suspension of AstraZeneca vaccine following the reports of an increase risk of blood clot after the shots.
Germany, France, Italy and Spain among other countries had on Monday March 15, 2021. Announced the suspension of AstraZeneca vaccine.
AstraZeneca is manufactured by the University of Oxford, aimed at protect against COVID-19. Based on the data provided by the manufacturer, on effectiveness, the vaccine has an efficacy of 63.09% against symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Common side effects associated with AstraZeneca according to World Health Organisation WHO includes Pain or tenderness at the injection site, Headaches, Muscle or joint aches, Fever, Chills and Nausea cyting that other less common side effects are possible.
The suspension of AstraZeneca in various countries started when report of increased blood clot after the shots weres released from vaccinated countries.
As of Tuesday March 16, 2021. Countries who announced the suspension of the vaccine are growing in numbers. Besides Germany, France, Italy and Spain, European countries including the Netherland, Ireland, Cyprus, Denmark, Austria, Iceland, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia have already suspended the vaccine.
However, AstraZeneca on Sunday said a review of safety data of people vaccinated with COVID-19 has shown no evidence of blood clots.
"An analysis of our safety data of more than 10 million records has shown no evidence of an increase risk of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis in any defined age group, gender, batch or in any particular country with COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine".
"In fact, the observed number of these types of events is significantly lower in those vaccinated than what would be expected among the general population". Said AstraZeneca.
In reaction, World Health Organisation (WHO) have said there is no indication to not use AstraZeneca" stressing that the organisation is aware some countries are dropping the vaccine.
