The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that high level of salt intake can raise blood pressure which is the risk leading factor for heart disease and stroke
It's obvious that most people around the world consume too much salt, estimated 9-12 grams per day on average a double of what is recommended.
The extra water stored in the body raises the blood pressure. The higher your blood pressure, the greater the strain on your heart, arteries, kidney and brain. This can lead to heart atacks, strokes, dementia and kidney disease, experts say.
WHO recommended a limit of 5 grams equivalent to a teaspoon in a day.
According to WHO, an estimated 2.5 million deaths could be prevented each year if everyone reduced their salt consumption to the recommended 5 grams per day by WHO.
On how to reduce salt intake, the organization issued 5 ways necessary to maintain the level of salt consumption.
"Use salt sparingly and reduce salty sauces and condiments".
"Avoid snacks that are high in salt".
"When using canned or dried products, choose varieties without added salt and suger".
"Remove salt and salty condiments from the table and avoid adding them out of habit".
"Check the labels on food and go for products with lower sodium content". The organization said.
